Properties
Uvanone 3C is an UV absorber, belonging to benzophenone derivatives; its absorption capacity ranges from 260 to 350 nm with two maxima of absorbance at 288 and 328 nm. Uvanone 3C does not absorb in the visible region (Figure 1). Uvanone 3C has an excellent solubility in aromatic solvents and in some polar solvents, e.g. ketone. It has a good solubility in plasticizers, it is slightly soluble in alcohols whereas is practically insoluble in water.
Uvanone 3C is compatible with different polymeric materials, particularly with polyolefins, it is thermally stable and is compatible with a broad range of additives, normally used in polymer formulations.
Uvanone 3C shows relevant synergistic effects in combination with Hals and Ni quenchers.
Applications
Uvanone 3C is recommended for the UV Stabilization of:
· Low and high density Polyethylene
· Polypropylene
· Olefin copolymers (EP, EPDM, EPR, EVA)
· Rigid and elastic PVC
· Polystyrene and styrenic copolymers
· Polyesters
· Epoxy resins
Use
The concentration of Uvanone 3C depends on the required service life of the article, on the thickness, presence of pigments, etc. In general we recommend addition level ranging from 0.1 to 1% of Uvanone 3C.
Uvanone 3C is particularly recommended to protect polyolefins from UV effect either in thin or thick articles. Both pigmented and unpigmented plastics can be protected by Uvanone 3C. The best stabilization system is achieved by a combination of Uvanone 3C with a Hals (e.g. Uvasorb HA88) or with a Ni-quencher (i.e. Uvasorb Ni). The combination of Uvanone 3C with Uvasorb HA88 or Uvasorb Ni offers not only a synergistic effect, but improves the cost performance ratio.
Dosage for thin sections
In LDPE,LLDPE,EVA films the use of Uvanone 3C or its synergistic combination with a polymeric Hals or quencher for the stabilization of agricultural greenhouse is strongly suggested. Below we report some typical formulations evaluated in a temperate climate.
